ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to human cloning, followed by a thought experiment. It is followed by a short discussion and then a series of questions. Scientists have successfully cloned animals, Dolly the sheep being the most famous example for animal cloning. The human cloning is explained with the thought experiment. It is presented with a case of a couple who lost their child and it is impossible for them to conceive naturally. However, a phone call from the local hospital offers them a chance of having another child by the idea of human cloning. The questions are intended to get the philosophy students thinking about the problems. They have used these kinds of questions in seminars as the questions set for seminars, so they also think that they can be used to spark conversation and discussion. The chapter also gives a cursory sketch of some of the ways in which philosophers have responded to the thought experiment.
