ABSTRACT

A goal was to increase the proportion of English speakers in the program to provide a balance of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. An ultimate goal may have been 50" English speakers and 50" native Spanish speakers, but realistically if the author could move the total population in the school to 40" English speakers and 60" native Spanish speakers, the author would achieve the balance he was aspiring to reach. As dual language programs started popping up around the state, he was not above enticing teachers from urban school districts in the state to work in our small, mountain community. By offering scholarships and incentives for students to enter higher education institutions and choose teaching in a dual language setting, he has high expectations that more local students will return to work in their home school district.
