ABSTRACT

Staff leaders are featured, the celebratory forum is open to parents and community members. The chapter explores to use a balance of English and Spanish throughout the assembly. Students taking action in their communities as a result of concept-based learning are recognized, and the school mission and routines are reinforced by reciting the school pledge, singing the school song, and acknowledging students and staff who exemplify the characteristics of global learners. As a society, the chapter uses the term culture in a variety of contexts related to the arts and intellectual achievements, but in a school setting we think of culture as our shared understanding of the purpose and vision for the school and our sense of cohesion and well-being. At first the chapter focuses on building relationships and cross-cultural connections for language acquisition, but then we realized our desire was more far-reaching than our small community and the handful of cultures represented.
