ABSTRACT

Expression is at the heart of communication and literacy. Leigh’s six-month study of first graders explored the ways in which drawing promotes literacy development and is a meaningful opportunity for children to express themselves. When inquiry and the arts are at the core of learning, children are able to make discoveries. Here I examine links between art, language, and a discovery approach to learning across the themes of art as meaning-making, alternatives to prescriptive curricular approaches, and the value of celebrating children’s art.
