ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the idea of an ethics-based pedagogy and illustrates its applications. It presents an ethical framework that can serve as the basis for ethical conversations and learning across the curriculum and introduces the idea of the 'ethical conversation' as a pedagogical approach to group problem-solving. The chapter proposes a simple yet important idea that an essential component of any reasonable response to the myriad social and environmental crises that plague our planet is to teach human beings to think and act ethically. It reminds us of the instructions passengers receive upon boarding an aircraft: 'In the event of an emergency, place the oxygen mask on yourself before assisting others. 'Ethics-based education is the oxygen mask humans need in order for us to be able to systemically save ourselves and our fellow passengers on "Spaceship Earth. The facilitator invites participants into a conversation about ethics by first preparing a physical space conducive to constructive civil dialogue.
