ABSTRACT

The nominal tradition is found in several documents of the New Testament, most clearly in John's Gospel, the letters of Paul, and the Revelation of St. John. Outside the New Testament there is supporting evidence in several sources, including Justin Martyr and the Nag Hammadi corpus. There appear to be three separate aspects of this nominal tradition in the early Christian documents. Jesus is appellated with the Name as a means of identifying him with God, he are inscribed with the Name, and most importantly for this study, in some passages Jesus is identified as the Name of God. Often in the New Testament we find statements that Jesus has been given some kind of special name. The inscription of the Name is a motif found repeatedly in Revelation, where it is obviously part of a well-developed tradition, though we have little other evidence of.
