ABSTRACT
The first reported visual-spectrum red LED was created in 1962 by Nick Holonyak, Jr, who was a researcher at General Electric. Holonyak is considered the father of the light-emitting diode. He later moved to the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, where a former graduate student came up with the first yellow LED and a ten times brighter red and red-orange LED in 1972.
