ABSTRACT

Self-care can be a touchy subject. Looking after oneself is often seen by society as being selfish or overly self-indulgent. Self-caring on the other hand refers to taking good care of oneself in ways that not only makes their life more fulfilling but also extends to others. Much of the Western research into happiness has focused on the individual and individual well-being. Freedom is not just a reckless abandon of rules and responsibilities but, at its very core, an act or process of self-caring. Stories have developed throughout many cultures, over many centuries, to teach many important lessons about life. Many a person from the Slavic countries of Europe has a tale to tell about how a lisovyk upset their usually good sense of direction and caused them to become uncharacteristically disoriented. Beneath the images of the scary lisovyk are some important messages about caring for oneself.
