ABSTRACT

The sibling relationship can be a special bond between brothers and sisters that persists across a lifespan. Almost 80 percent of children grow up with a sibling in the home (Kreider, 2007). As one illustration, in North America, where some 60,000 children under the age of 20 die each year, sibling bereavement occurs for the young within society. Sibling deaths also occur across every phase of the life cycle, and so myriad others will eventually experience this form of life event.
