ABSTRACT
This chapter presents landmark case law and the needed knowledge base to assist in decision making during the counseling process. The mandated Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements will also be introduced. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a biofeedback technique that focuses on heart rhythm feedback for improved self-regulation. HRV is derived from the electrocardiogram (ECG). The Institute of HeartMath and its researchers have conducted research and discovered that people have the ability to regulate and control breathing through and with the heart. The American Counseling Association (ACA) focuses the Preamble to its Code of Ethics on issues of diversity as an ethical matter. The ACA is an educational, scientific, and professional organization whose members are dedicated to the enhancement of human development throughout the lifespan. ACA members recognize diversity in our society and embrace a cross-cultural approach in support of the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of each individual.
