ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how families relate to and create nature connections. It discusses the home itself and different forms of homes, including new home designs and home-based outdoor spaces. The chapter also looks at creating homes that are more natural. It reveals the necessity and the potential for nature availability in the child's home environment. The chapter focuses on the values and attitudes given to the incidental creatures that will vary by culture and by family. It looks specifically at the home environment of the child. For children, home is the place where they first encounter nature and from where they begin their wider exploration of the natural world. It is possible for homes at most densities to reflect natural values, although admittedly far more difficult at the highest densities as in cities such as Hong Kong or Madrid.
