ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what is assessment. It describes why assessment is important to your leadership learning and development, to describe what can be assessed and how, and then give you the opportunity to assess yourself in a number of different ways. Assessment provides a benchmark and an awareness of where you are right now—what is working, what is working well, and what is not working as well. Self-assessment is the process of looking at yourself in order to assess your own personal attributes. This can be informal, such as through journaling. An assessment center is used to evaluate a number of individuals' behaviors across a variety of situations including job related simulations, leaderless group discussions, role plays, interviews, and psychological tests. One of the ways a leader can undertake self-assessment is through personality inventories. A final technique for assessment is an individual psychological assessment, which is similar to an assessment center except you go through it by yourself.
