ABSTRACT

The preceding chapters demonstrate quite clearly the wide-ranging infl uence of culture on various forms of psychopathology. The relationship between culture and psychopathology, however, is far from simple, and is often indirect and multifaceted. Our knowledge is limited by the paucity of research studies that can take into account the multiple confounding factors that cause the complexity. Even descriptive and epidemiological studies are relatively scarce, and they can become quickly outdated by the changes in culture that occur over time. These studies only allow a broad, general understanding of the fi eld, enticing us to increase our knowledge base and our cultural sensitivity.
