ABSTRACT
whitworth’s successor, earl talbot, arrived in Ireland in October 1817. The new lord lieutenant had Irish family connections, was opposed to catholic emancipation, and is remembered chiefly for his interest in the problems of Irish agriculture and for his determined efforts to win the good will of the country. 1 Although his intentions were of the best, he remains one of the lords lieutenant of Ireland often relegated to a footnote. 2
