ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the acoustic characteristics of a vehicle body. It explains the loudspeaker design for specialised conditions. The chapter looks at the design and construction of a multi-track mobile recording vehicle, designed at end of twentieth century. The first Manor Mobile was built in a 20 ft × 8 ft × 8 ft ISO freight container, and Banzai vehicle had a working space only slightly smaller. Both vehicles were made principally from Glasonit-reinforced plywood (GRP) with heavily damped plywood floors on steel beams. The mobile studios worked well for recording purposes, and built up an excellent reputation, but they could be difficult environments for mixing. After purchase of NOV vehicle, it was taken from Holland to England, where the company Kustom Konstructions, had been engaged to make conversion. The brief was to make a mobile control room that was suitable for recording and mixing, with the provision of space for 24-track analogue and 24-track digital recorders.
