ABSTRACT

The Subak System as a Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy is the most recent World Heritage site in Indonesia known as the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2012 (UNESCO, 2012). Located on Bali, a famous international tourism destination, the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province represents the Balinese unique traditional water management known as subak. Subak exemplifies the Balinese ancient phil - osophical principle of Tri Hita Karana that promotes the balanced relationship between the realms of the spirit, the human world, and nature. This democratic and egalitarian irrigation management structure, in conjunction with networks of associated water-temples, has main - tained the agro-ecological rice terraces system at the scale of the whole watershed. The subak system has been recognized by UNESCO to be of Outstanding Universal Value as it co-created a landscape that has been managed by local communities for centuries (UNESCO, 2012).
