ABSTRACT

In Japan natural phenomena of various kinds have traditionally been the subject of religious reverence and worship, and many natural holy sites and places exist in nature. Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s most popular and best-known sacred natural sites. As the tallest single peak in Japan, its imposing presence is viewed from near and far, inspiring a powerful spiritual response in people. The history of Mount Fuji as a spiritual place originates in the universal primitive form of mountain worship that is common throughout Japan. Over time, traditional mountain worship merged with introduced religions and evolved into a unique form of worship particular to Mount Fuji. For the Japanese people, Mount Fuji is a symbol of mountain worship as a whole.
