ABSTRACT

The case study presented in this chapter introduces a leadership development programme called the Aspiring Leaders Programme (ALP). It explores the critical pedagogical approach used and the outcomes of the programme. Young people have been criticised for not being politically active and exercising their right to vote. They were left feeling aggrieved and disillusioned. This illuminates the need to understand how to better engage young people in society. The Francis C Scott Charitable Trust (FCSCT) had a vision for a leadership programme to future proof Cumbria and North Lancashire's Voluntary and Charitable Sector (VCS). A study by Warwick University found that tackling social exclusion and marginalisation amongst young people in Cumbria requires a multi-faceted approach. ALP needed to be cognisant of and able to address the complex nature of the social issues that impact on employment aspirations in the county. The three-year programme offered leads to a degree in Social Enterprise Leadership.
