ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes that a focus on social justice is the key way to support wellbeing – and that without social justice, there will be no lasting wellbeing – the two are interdependent. It discusses the different conceptualisations of social justice with their resonance with wellbeing. Social justice comprises different dimensions, which need to be considered as functioning in interrelation so that one can support children, young people and families' (CYPF's) increased wellbeing: feeling good and functioning well. Functional social justice contributes to wellbeing. When people are well, they are able to contribute to social justice. When all the dimensions of social justice are present, it is likely that people will experience wellbeing and function well. The presupposition is that when resources are distributed equally, when there is appropriate social control, when there is freedom from discrimination, and when there is a moral duty to others, then people will be able to be more well and function better.
