ABSTRACT

Preamble After the turn of the millennium, Marion Jones was at first one of the most famous and later one of the most notorious athletes worldwide. Her athletic abilities and achievements, her good looks, her involvement in doping as well as her relationship with C.J. Hunter, convicted of drug abuse, hit the headlines of the national and international mass media. American newspapers embedded two dominant metaphors in their narratives about Jones and her husband: they were construed as the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and as ‘Svengali’ and his victim.
