ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of eleven step breakdowns of some award-winning and well-respected films such as All about Eve, Shakespeare in Love, Rain Man, Toy Story, and Sideways. Based on Jule Selbo's unique eleven step story structure for building story through characters, the chapter teaches budding screenwriters the skills to focus and shape their ideas, turning them into stories filled with character development, strong plot elements based on obstacles and conflicts, and multifaceted emotional arcs. Breaking down successful films illuminates good story structure. The eleven step breakdowns for protagonist, antagonist and notes focuses on the character and the character's journey. They all begin with the protagonist's want and show how all the elements of the screenplay focus on that facet. Once screenwriters understand the screenwriting process, they will never look at a film the same way again.
