ABSTRACT

Prometheus has become the symbol par excellence in western culture of the rebellion in the field of metaphysics and religion, as well as the embodiment of the rejection of the absurdity of the human condition. He appeared primarily as the liberator from metaphysical suffering, especially in Edgar Quinet's Prometheus 1838, which aimed to present humanity saved and taken to the bosom of God under the guidance of the spirit of religion. Calderon's play was the first major work devoted to the myth since Aeschylus, which extends the main interpretations of the Renaissance. The only exception was Boccaccs Genealogia deorum gentilium 1373, in which Prometheus symbolizes the scholar and becomes the champion of knowledge. The theme is well illustrated by Louis Menard in Promethee deliver, 1843, which proclaims the triumph of knowledge and the advent of universal love.
