ABSTRACT

At about the same time, the Carmen Campiodoctris, a Latin poem composed in Catalonia, of which sadly only a small fragment remains, used the relationship between the Cid and the Count of Barcelona as its central theme, placing great emphasis on their first military encounter. The writings of the first half of the twelfth century show the heroic figure of the Cid recognizing the legitimacy of the Spanish sovereignty. However, perhaps under the inspiration of the small Spanish setdement in Rouen, and in particular of a certain Rodrigue de Chalon, it was at this point that Corneille introduced the Cid to France. The defence of a right of sovereignty is the stuff from which legends are created, while the task of myth is to provide a firm basis for social order. In parallel with the dominant tradition of the Cid, centred on the reign of Alfonso VI.
