ABSTRACT

The notion of Eternal Recurrence is so vast that Nietzsche could not formulate it himself: instead, he delegated the task to several voices, none of which has the last word on the subject. It was in the time of Hegel, during the century in which historical science developed and the ideologies of progress were born that Nietzsche rediscovered the idea of Eternal Recurrence. For Nietzsche himself it was a revelation, in Zarathustra's words it becomes a doctrine and in relation to Dionysus it remains the god's own enigma. Nietzsche refers to Zarathustra as the doctor of Eternal Recurrence. It is significant that Nietzsche chose to present his doctrine in Zarathustra, a poetic work in which all is riddle and symbol and there is no question of formulating any real philosophical system. Thus Heidegger concludes his analysis of the concept of Eternal Recurrence by asserting that it is Nietzsche's own metaphysical idea.
