ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the social and solidarity economy (SSE) framework, and examines the global phenomena, focusing on aspects such as Global Citizenship, Social Movements (SMs), New Social Movements (NSMs) and New Communities (NCs) and their interconnection with technology as an enabler. It explores a hotchpotch of theories and theorists in order to understand the development of each aspect and illustrates SSE initiatives. The chapter illustrates the evolution of SMs from orthodox to contemporary forms. It examines different examples of SSE initiatives scattered globally and discusses the role of technology and the emergence of NCs enabled by the Web 2.0. The chapter establishes what the Web 2.0 is and how it functions based on different authors and elaborates the concept through the example of the Citizens Foundation in Iceland, an SSE practice. It explains NCs throughout the concept of coworking and the practice of coworking spaces.
