ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relevant theories associated with behavior management strategies and the theoretical underpinnings of behavioral mitigation techniques. Selected theories were chosen based on their relevance to managing the types of behaviors experiential education instructors may need to address during their programs. To begin, one useful theory that is a logical starting place for this discussion is Reinforcement Theory. It has been used to explain human attraction, train students on a variety of outcomes, and treat diseases. The stages of change model are a theory created to help understand how people modify behavior. It can be useful to help understand that change in behavior is a process, and not an instantaneous transition. These theories are borrowed from the various fields of psychology, sociology, and social work and can provide insight into why a student is exhibiting a particular behavior, and procedures that can be taken to intervene, and help them have a successful EE experience.
