ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to accommodate student medications, tips and tricks for tracking medication usage, and best practices. Programs need to have a very detailed and thorough plan and staff training for how to accommodate student medications and issues. Also important considerations are what to do if a student misses a medication while on course, or if there is an abuse of substances while an individual is under the care of the Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) program. It includes a number of issues including not taking medications, selling medications, and/or taking an unhealthy dose of their own medication. The chapter considers allowing the students to keep medication that may need to be administered quickly like inhalers or epinephrine. Managing a withdrawal from a student who has been addicted to medication can be extremely dangerous and should be treated with the utmost caution. Programs should consider having a plan in place for lost, missed, or dropped medication.
