ABSTRACT

While unfortunate, substance abuse, rule violation, and inappropriate behaviors do happen during outdoor adventure education (OAE) programs. There is no recipe or formula for how to handle these situations as there are many variables that factor into these events, including past behaviors, environmental factors, and social settings. This chapter explores various options and issues relative to these difficult topics so that students and practitioners can make the best informed decisions possible. Substance abuse occurs when any student overuses, underuses, or misuses a controlled substance. If a student continually engages in a socially risky behavior, like verbally assaulting another student, the instructor might document the incidents and have the student initial the document certifying that they are aware of the rule violation. When dealing with inappropriate behaviors, it is important to remember a few techniques, regardless of the type of intervention are going to utilize.
