ABSTRACT

The aim of this book centers on the interface between phonology and syntax, and especially on how phonology is sensitive to syntactic or prosodic structure at the phrasal level. This topic has long been noticed but is yet unsolved. About a half century ago, discussions by Chomsky, Halle, and Lukoff (1956) and Chomsky and Halle (1968) about the cyclic mode and the domain of rule application already touched upon the impact of morphosyntax on phonology. However, the study of post-lexical rules sensitive to syntactic or prosodic structure still contains many outstanding issues, although quite a few infl uential theories and approaches have been proposed.
