ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses what is meant by nuclear family, extended family, World Triangle, horizontal and vertical stressors, and Family Growth Model? It also addresses why is working from the strength of the family preferable to problem-oriented working with a family? The chapter examines how has the nuclear family and extended family model developed? It also examines which techniques resulted from the nuclear and extended family methods? In social work, the nuclear and extended family methods is focused on improving the personal growth of family members by mobilizing one's own strength to reduce sources of tension. In response to the limitations associated with a problem or deficit-oriented approach to family assessment and intervention, practitioners in social work, mental health, family services and education have expressed a heightened interest in strength-based assessment and intervention. The aim of normalizing family members' distress is to depathologize and contextualize their feelings and experience.
