ABSTRACT

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) emerged in the 1970s and can be seen as a real revolution in the behavioural and cognitive sciences. In CBT, change occurs when the client understands the link between his thoughts, feelings and behaviour and can challenge and correct any unhelpful thinking patterns. The role of the CBT therapist is primarily to help the client to identify and change these maladaptive thought patterns. So, the major insight of CBT is that it is not external events that determine our feelings, but rather it is our interpretation of the events that creates our feeling states. However, it is not the event that matters and generates our feelings, but rather our interpretation of the event. This is equally true with sexual addiction. The urge diary will give important information that will be useful in attempting to move out of sexual addiction and into a more balanced way of life.
