ABSTRACT

There are a number of arguments against the notion of sexual addiction. Some people think that an addiction must involve ingested substances. Recent studies in neuroscience are making this view out of date. The brain chemistry of romantic attraction is a good example. It has all the characteristics of the effect of drugs of choice. Another perhaps more important argument is that the concept of sexual addiction turns sexuality itself into a pathology. Human sexual behaviours and sexual templates have a wide range of variations. Male sexuality is linear, targeted and extremely powerful. Men are attracted and women attract. Women who are good at attracting improve their reproductive strategy. There is a clear prejudice against sexual minorities. Western culture deeply discriminates against people with alternative sexual scripts. There has been a long tradition in the West of placing sexuality within a punitive framework.
