ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of evidence related to one-to-one support in labour and discusses the complexities associated with the myriad of ways that the concept has been interpreted and incorporated into policy and practice in different settings. The art of supporting women for labour and birth is fostered by the relationships between the woman and those who will be close to her as she journeys through pregnancy, birth and new motherhood. It provides an overview of evidence related to one-to-one support in labour and discusses the complexities associated with the myriad of ways that the concept has been interpreted and incorporated into policy and practice in different settings. In the concept analysis of one-to-one support to identifes that women want the midwife or birth supporter to be in the room. In pairs or small groups: the chapter highlights some women's experiences of support from midwives during their labours.
