ABSTRACT

This is the fourth chapter in Part I ‘Learning to teach: theory, methods and contexts’. The chapter describes the responses of teacher education programmes to evolving policy pressures, using as illustration two exemplary programmes one in England and one in the United States that represent partnerships between higher education institutions (HEIs) and schools, and another programme that represents an alternative route into teaching. A detailed description of the design of these programmes is offered, based on analysis of the programme documents.
