ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to communicate effectively with our children and teenagers. Communication seems to come naturally, and it is taken for granted by humans as being part of what they do. Without good communication these conflicts become much harder to resolve. Most vitally, it is through communication that we transmit our values to our children. Communication develops in different ways depending on the degree to which children feel that they are being listened to. Some important research has been carried out over the past decade or so on what is called information management. In Active Listening we make it very clear that we are all ears to what the other person is saying and by doing so encourage them to open up. An enormous amount can be communicated through gestures, tone of voice, eye-contact, the way one stand, and so on. This is often called non-verbal communication.
