ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an important strength of the type of hybrid strategy that is its compatibility with both the 'reform from within' and the 'reform from without' strategies. Specifically, if one wants to work for change for a pluralist economics from within economics departments then the inherent interdisciplinarity of the degree offers a great means to do so. Philosophy and economics (PPE) degrees are an effective means for transcending a common administrative problem whereby universities impose maximum quotas on students undertaking cross-faculty subjects. PPE degrees can also facilitate cross-faculty collaboration in teaching. Pillar model and bridge model are basic PPE models. La Trobe University's PPE degree was largely based on the pillar model. Many of La Trobe's PPE students have a strong interest in political economy, particularly the more senior students who had the opportunity to undertake political economy tutorials and subjects, though the type of student cohort attracted to the degree has had a general orientation towards political economy.
