ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on instilling hope in our addicted patients by connecting them with a higher power, a supportive and caring social network, and/or their own inner strengths. Following are three main approaches that clinicians can consider to instill hope in their addicted clients during their journey to recovery: the higher power approach, the social network approach, and the inner strengths approach. Specifically, the higher power approach involves the Twelve Step philosophy and guidance and spiritual well-being. The social network strategy encompasses clinicians' unconditional and genuine regards and acceptance, family-oriented treatment or psychoeducation, and Twelve Step-oriented self-help groups and non-Twelve-Step-oriented self-help groups. The inner strengths method targets the will to meaning, a developmental model, emotion regulation, the motivational interviewing (MI), and the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). These ten units are singled out to highlight their functions in facilitating motivation and hope; their utility, however, is not limited to just lifting spirits and creating optimism among clients.
