ABSTRACT

When anyone ‘gives up’ it is usually because the task has become too difficult, or they became distracted, or they lost their motivation, or all of the above. We can all relate to these obstacles. Think of the last time you made a pact with yourself to change a habit. Let’s say it was to eat less chocolate. You were doing just fine until you walked past the chocolate shop. There it was in front of you. The fruit shop was right across from where you stood and although you could satisfy your ‘hunger’ for something sweet with a punnet of delicious blueberries, your eyes returned to the chocolate. You made eye contact with the sales person and there – it’s all over! You made your purchase. Persisting was difficult, the chocolate distracted you and your motivation to eat fruit instead went out the window!
