ABSTRACT

The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has encountered a number of challenges and opportunities in recent years. There is increasing attention to the way that construction and operation of the built environment uses resources, signi cant change to the technology of design and construction through the application of computers, and broad changes to the technology deployed within environments by occupants and operators. Spanning both high and low culture-from signature buildings to prosaic warehouses, designers and contractors stand out as having a high impact on our quality of life and are seen to operate in a rapidly evolving technological domain. Yet there seems to be little industry-wide bene t derived from the increasing use of computing.
