ABSTRACT

This chapter overviews the design and planning process that should be undertaken once the decision is made to build a new video facility or renovate an existing one. The information presented is solely intended to provide guidance to the broadcast engineer in understanding requirements of building the "average, non-news" broadcast facility. Media production requires space definitions not found in any other facility: television studio, voice-over booths, edit rooms, client screening rooms, and so forth. "Tech core" for the purpose of the discussion includes all areas such as ingest control rooms, edit rooms, master control, production control, news control, audio control, electronic rack rooms, server rooms, IT, and engineering areas. Most facilities will need some tape storage for the foreseeable future, both for legacy analog and digital tape material. In some cases, interior sound isolation construction should be resiliently decoupled from the exterior construction.
