ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the subject of television lighting, describing the various parts of the system with some guidelines on their use, including basic requirements, lighting fixtures, suspension systems, dimmers, and control systems. While a setup is relatively easy with one camera and one subject, the reality of television production is that there are generally multiple camera angles, more than one subject, and a complex background. The grid height for small and medium-size studios is a function of the TV aspect ratio and the normal wide-angle zoom lens. In the development of a fully integrated lighting system, it is essential to coordinate all the building's structural, electrical, and mechanical systems in relationship to each other and the grid. At the grid level, power is commonly distributed through prewired plugging strips. The high frequencies created by the Silicon controlled rectifier switching waveforms may also be radiated or carried through electrical power circuits.
