ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book sets out some of the key themes which have emerged from the spread of and increased interest in children's participation following the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It focuses on to set the scene for the case studies that draw out and analyses the key dimensions that enable meaningful participation and which need to be addressed in 'going beyond voice'. The book looks at the key themes for policy and practice of participation. It aims to provide conclusions pulling together core dimensions emerging through analysis of case studies which have practice action and use in taking children's participation beyond voice. The book also looks at the background to children's participation, definitions, practice and links to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), and issues of power, citizenship and public decision-making.
