ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a framework for getting started with wellbeing in the workplace, with these three fundamental tenets: personal resilience, creating the right environment and aligning your leaders. In terms of the public sector, a great deal of research on resilience has focused on the emergency and caring professions such as the police, army, ambulance service, nursing, and social work. As emotions are critical, research on emotional resilience has linked people's physical and emotional reactions and seeks to explain why the body reacts in the way it does and to offer useful strategies to help overcome the negative reactions and effects. Creating the right environment in the workplace is no easy task, perhaps one of the toughest managers face. Leadership plays such a huge part in the wellbeing landscape that it cannot be anything other than at the forefront of the minds of those charged with public services.
