ABSTRACT

In addition, the study of chromatic tones continues by focusing on a specific chromatic pitch, 4ˆ, which is a tendency tone that leads strongly to 5ˆ. The motion of 4ˆ to 5ˆ mimics the resolution of 7ˆ to 1ˆ, a melodic feature that is so powerful that it can be chromatically applied to other scale degrees. The melodies in this module employ 4ˆ as a temporary leading-tone to 5ˆ. This means that you will on occasion hear the dominant scale degree as the new tonic, either temporarily or permanently. Example 7.1 includes a motion to the dominant and shows how one might temporarily think of the scale degrees involved in the melodic approach to 5ˆ in either the home key of A major, or in the key of the dominant: E major.
