ABSTRACT

The next step is to begin working with motivic cells, or sets. The first line of Example 14.2 shows all six permutations of the set (014). Work on this example as written, then transpose it to begin on other pitches. Notice that these trichords are notated without a meter and without stems; this allows you to practice working with these sets without having to think about rhythm. Nevertheless, you should experiment with making one note of each trichord twice the value of the other two, working at various tempos, etc. The second line of Example 14.2 contains all six permutations of the inversion of (014) and should be practiced in the same way.
