Just as I and V could support a limited number of scale degrees in the soprano, ii and IV are very strongly associated with scale degrees 4ˆ and 6ˆ, neither of which are supported by I or V (see Example 2.1). On the other hand, 1ˆ is supported by both IV and I, while 2ˆ is supported by ii and V.
