ABSTRACT
To coincide with the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle, organizers commissioned the city's iconic Monorail. Thirty years after the monorail's construction, Kevin moved to Seattle amidst active public discussions about investing in mass transit. Despite voter approval of a major light rail building initiative for the region, Seattle-centric transportation activists were intent on developing a transportation alternative that would serve the City of Seattle specifically, and would use elevated monorail technology, as had been employed in the original 1962 Seattle Monorail. In 1997, Seattle voters approved a ballot initiative to create a private organization to plan and seek funding for a 64-km monorail system that would criss-cross the city. The Elevated Transportation Company received legislative authorization from Washington State and approval from the voters to begin building the first phase of a monorail system, the 22.5-km Green Line.
