ABSTRACT

Lessons 11 and 12 introduce five key counseling and teaching techniques that are particularly effective when working with persons with language and learning challenges. You’ll also learn how to apply these techniques to relapse prevention, a common but advanced CBT approach. I chose relapse prevention both because it is important that all mental health workers have some grounding in it and because this approach can be particularly hard to implement with persons who have language and learning challenges. I want to illustrate how five teaching/counseling strategies commonly used in Deaf mental health care (DMHC) are helpful for making the complex topic of relapse prevention more accessible.
