ABSTRACT

Over the last several years continuous satellite trackingof landuse change inLatinAmericahas recorded a sharp decline in deforestation, much to the surprise – and disbelief – of many, and documented a robust forest resurgence (INPE 2009, 2011, Schmook 2010, Mello and Alves 2011, Aide et al. 2013). This decline is recorded in all Amazonian countries (See Figures 1 and 2). This transformation would have been unimaginable in the 1970s and 1980s, the periods that most shaped recent Euro-American perceptions of tropical forest trends.
