ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the family's experience of mental illness (MI), the history of the family's role in the treatment of MI, and family psychoeducation as an evidence-based intervention. It also focuses on an overview of the psychoeducational multifamily group model, and current research focuses on earlier identification and family-based treatment with risk factors for MI. The chapter offers the psychoeducational multiple family group (PMFG) model, which is based in the principles of Family psychoeducation (FPE), behavioral family management and multifamily approaches. While joining is considered the first step in treatment, joining continues throughout the course of the intervention. The workshop includes information about the brain and psychobiology, medication, and the role of the family in supporting recovery. The chapter lists that family guidelines are based in neuropsychology: Go Slow, Keep It Cool, Give Each Other Space, Keep It Simple, Follow Doctor's Orders, Set Limits, No Street Drugs or Alcohol, and Pick Up on Early Signs.
